As recently as just two or three decades ago, most of the safety features that were added to cars, trucks, and SUVs were put there to protect people in the event of a crash. Car manufacturers looked for various ways to make seatbelts, airbags, and other devices safer than they were. But in recent years, more and more manufacturers have put an emphasis on preventing crashes from happening in the first place. Here are a few forms of car safety technology they have incorporated into vehicles.
Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)
A lot of the accidents that take place out on the road occur because people aren’t paying attention and don’t have time to stop before rear-ending someone in front of them. AEB is helping reduce the number of times this happens. This type of technology utilizes a system that includes cameras and radars to detect vehicles, pedestrians, and other obstacles in the road. When one shows up, AEB will alert you to it and brace your vehicle for impact. It has proven to be very effective in preventing accidents from happening.
Lane Departure Warning
When you’re driving down a busy highway, it’s important for you to stay in your lane so that you don’t cause any issues for those around you. If you leave your lane, you run the risk of sideswiping someone. You also run the risk of forcing them to swerve into another lane, which could cause them to collide with another driver. This type of technology alerts you when you are drifting out of your lane so that you are able to get back into your lane as quickly as possible.
Blind Spot Warning
While Lane Departure Warning will prevent you from accidentally drifting into another lane out on the road, Blind Spot Warning will prevent you from driving into another lane on purpose without seeing another driver coming. In the past, drivers mostly had to accept that blind spots would be a part of driving their vehicle. But today, this type of technology will let you know when something or someone is in your blind spot so that you don’t run into them.
