With winter right around the corner there’s no better time to brush up on winter safety tips for when you hit the roadways.
While the roads themselves will be slicker and more dangerous, there are certain things you can do to help ensure you don’t end up in an accident or sustain injuries.
Whether it be creating a checklist for your vehicle to make sure it is ready for winter, properly clearing your vehicle of snow and ice before you leave the driveway, driving slowly and carefully or anything in between, there are a variety of things that can be done to reach your destination safely in winter.
#1: Make sure your vehicle is prepared for the cold
When it comes to staying safe on the roads during the winter months, preparing for anything will help prevent a dangerous situation or serious accident.
It’s important to make sure your head lights and brake lights are working properly, test your car’s battery, check windshield washer fluid and to make sure your car’s safety sensors are all clean.
As winter progresses you should keep an eye on your tires to make sure they don’t lose tire pressure. Tires that aren’t properly filled can be dangerous when driving on slicks roads or when having to stop quickly.
#2: Properly clear off your vehicle
Another wintertime essential is to make sure you’re properly clearing off your vehicle when there is snow or ice covering it.
It’s not only a bad look to have snow piled up on your car’s roof but it can be extremely dangerous when you’re driving.
The snow or ice that you leave over your vehicle’s windows will block your view of the other cars on the roadway, and even if you make sure you wipe off the windows, snow will continue to fall off the roof and obstruct your view if you don’t perform a proper brush off.
#3: Drive slowly, carefully
When the roads are covered with snow or there is potential for ice, it is essential to drive the speed limit and to be on the lookout for drivers that are driving aggressively.
It is suggested to move over to let aggressive or speeding drivers pass and to take your time.
Slick roads and black ice can be in your path at nearly anytime during the winter and if you’re not driving cautiously it can lead to skidding, spinning out or a serious accident. Make sure to go easy on the gas and brakes as well to protect yourself, your loved ones and your vehicle.
